The Living Coast

Volume III Collection Essay
If Volume I was about the coast at its most dramatic and Volume II was about the lighthouses that mark it, Volume III is about everything that lives between them.

Six prints, six lives. Two are wildlife — a brown pelican taking off at first light, and a gull standing its ground against a juvenile bald eagle in the middle of a fight I happened to be standing next to when it started. One is the unofficial entrance to Otter Rock — a roadside spruce hung with old fishing buoys that's become as much a landmark as Devils Punchbowl. One is the night fishing fleet at Newport, lit up like a small city on water. One is a colony of mussels with a bright orange band I've never seen anywhere else on this coast. One is dune grass moving in a wind I tried — and mostly failed — to freeze.

Every photograph here is about something alive on the Oregon Coast, in one form or another. Wild and working. Animal and human. Permanent and washing in and out with the tide.
