I went to Thor's Well on a high-tide swell day. The ocean was angry. I was alone. So instead of standing in the spray zone like everyone else, I climbed up the hill, put on a long lens, and shot down.
Most photographs of Thor's Well are made from a few feet away. This one was made from a few hundred.
"Different from anything I've ever seen from here. Which is exactly why I made it."
The print isn't what I went there to get — but it might be more honest about the place than any of the close-up shots, because it shows the geology and the scale and the danger all at once.
Sometimes the better photograph is the one you didn't plan.
